Chaplain’s Report
Rev. Msgr. Charles Parry

The late Pope John Paul II was a man of extraordinary gifts and talents.  Before entering the seminary in his native Poland, he was a writer and an amateur actor.  He loved the theater and saw it as a means of expressing the truth regarding life, culture and the human person.  He authored a play entitled The Jeweler's Shop.  The thrust of this insightful work is to reinforce for the viewing audience the God-given meaning of love, marriage, and commitment.
I am pleased to announce that this rare production is coming to our area. The play will be performed in the Heritage Room at Holy Family parish in Mitchellville, MD on Friday, October 17th and Saturday, October 18th at 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, October 19th at 3 p.m.  The play is one-hour in length without intermission.  Refreshments will be served at the two evening performances.
Six of our local parishes are sponsoring this unique event: Sacred Heart, St. Pius X, and St. Edward all in Bowie; St. Ambrose in Cheverly, St. Joseph in Largo and Holy Family in Mitchellville.  Tickets are $15/$12 (students and seniors).  You can contact any of the above parishes to obtain tickets.
Come and spend an evening or afternoon out to enjoy The Jeweler's Shop written by Pope John Paul II.

Our Monthly Family Breakfast was a big hit in September, thanks to all who supported the breakfast by attending or helping run the event. If you missed it mark your calendar now for the 2nd Sunday of October and every month after that. Everyone who attended our first End of Summer Bash enjoyed themselves and it is sure to become an annual event. Thanks to Rick Marek for chairing this dance.
With October also comes the Tootsie Roll Drive to benefit those with Intellectual Disabilities. If you have not done so already, PLEASE call Chairman Dave Grabowski and volunteer two hours of your time to help in this important service to our community.
Also this month, we will be conducting a membership blitz at all the churches we serve. This involves one or two members outside of church to hand out membership literature and answer questions about the Knights from interested parishioners. Call Warden Joe Massimini if you are available to help.
There are still a few days to get your State Car Raffle tickets in. Thanks to the many who responded early and generously.
Knight of the Month for September – PGK Dave Grabowski. Dave is chairman of the Tootsie Roll Drive and he headed up the kitchen crew for our 1st Family Breakfast in September. He also cooked for University of Maryland students at the Newman Center in College Park. This is only a fraction of what Dave does for the Council so when you see him thank him for all he does.
Family of the Month for September - Bill Macri and his wife Jackie. Bill and Jackie helped with our Car Raffle ticket mailing and with the Oktoberfest Sunday Family Dinner. They are both also active at St. Edwards’s parish. Congratulations Bill and Jackie.

District Deputy’s Report

My fellow Knights, we are already in October.  I would like to thank each Council in our District.  All Councils have made good strides in meeting their membership goals for this year.  These goals cannot be met without the participation of each Council member.  Although we are making good strides in new members, we cannot forget about the current members of our Councils.
I am asking each member who has not been to a Council meeting recently; please attend at least one meeting before the end of the year.  Also, if you happen to be in arrears in your dues, please contact your Council’s Grand Knight or Financial Secretary and make arrangements to get up-to-date.  Also, if you have not been active in a Council event, please volunteer.  This is a good way to get re-involved in your Council’s activities.  We all NEED your help to be successful.
October is also the month during which we celebrate our Order’s namesake.  If you have not done so, please send in your reservations for the Columbus Day Ball and make arrangements to participate in the Parade.  Also, in October we conduct one of the most important charity programs, the Campaign For People With Intellectual Disabilities (Tootsie Roll Drive).  I hope every member in each Council will volunteer to participate in this important program.  Don’t forget, YOUR Council decides which organization that helps people with Intellectual Disabilities in our community receives the funds from this effort.
Our Membership Blitz will be held in October.  To carry on the great works of our Order, we need new members.  I ask your wholehearted support to make this Blitz a huge success.  We owe it to ourselves to give something back to our church, community and Councils.  For, “We Are Called To Serve.”

Almost every program is represented by at least one scheduled program for the month of October, beginning with a First Friday Mass and Mini-supper on the 3rd.   A Community Dance is scheduled for the 5th as is the Soccer Shootout which will be taking place at St. Edwards.  The Columbus Day Ball will be held at LaFontaine Bleu in Glen Burnie on the 11th, and the second of hopefully many Family Breakfasts will be held on Sunday, the 12th.  There will be a 3rd Friday Family Dinner on the 17th, and on the 25th will be the Children’s Halloween Party (11-2) and Italian Night (8-11).  Please look for details on these events in this issue of The Accolade.
The Program Directors have been doing a great job organizing and running these events, but assistance is still needed in some areas.  Help in the kitchen for the dinners and breakfasts seem to be of most need at this time as cooks and help are scheduled no later tha

Thank you to all Knights and family members who jumped in and helped make the first annual End of Summer Bash a rousing success. Those who attended now know the answer to the mystery question…”What are heavy appetizers?”

I am pleased with the spirit and cooperation demonstrated by the Council Brothers in responding to the changes in number of Friday evening meals and the Sunday brunch.  I am, however, still in need of Brother Knights to volunteer to assist in these events.  It seems that the same people do most of the work at the Hall.  So if you can spare some time on a Friday evening primarily, please let me know when you are available to assist and I will include you in my schedule.   I am a firm believer that if you don’t continue to move ahead you will atrophy.  So we have made some significant changes in our family activities but can’t sit on our laurels.  We need to move forward with movies for children on Friday evenings if possible, or perhaps on Sunday afternoons.  I am looking for those who have ideas, ways to accomplish those ideas and are willing to work on them.   Please see me at the Hall or call me.

October is Blitz Month.  The first recruiting blitz of this Fraternal Year will be October 18th and 19th at Sacred Heart, Saint Pius X, Elizabeth Seton, and Saint Edwards Churches.  We are hoping to have three people at each Mass.  If you would like to help, there is a sign up sheet on the doors to the Game Room. Please put your name down for a Mass.  There will be a short meeting (ten minutes) after the October 9th Business meeting for all who signed up to help.  We will distribute materials to distribute to candidates and talk about what to do with the filled out Form 100's.
You do not have to have a red jacket to participate in the blitz.  Just be willing to stand at the entrance to your Church and talk with prospective members.  Recruiting people is not hard.  All it takes is a firm handshake and a friendly smile.  When I have spoken to new members of the Knights and asked them why they have not joined before, most of the time I hear it is because no one ever asked them.  Please consider helping out with this October's blitz.  You have nothing to lose but a little time and you may gain a good friend in the process.
If you have any questions, please contact me either via e-mail or by phone.

Fraternal Benefits

I am proud to be a member of the Million Dollar Round Table, the leading association of life insurance and financial services professionals – and one to which only about 6 percent of life insurance professionals in North America qualify.  The MDRT Code of Ethics calls for member agents to “always place the interests of their clients above their own interests,” and to “give the best possible advice to clients by seeking to maintain and improve professional knowledge, skills and competence.”  MDRT expects of their members exactly what you expect of me – exemplary sales practices…outstanding service…high ethical standards.
What does this mean for you and your family?  It means that I won’t simply try to push a policy on you.  I’ll take the time to review your current coverage with you.  I’ll ask questions about your needs, goals and budget.  I’ll recommend a plan to help you meet your needs and move toward accomplishing your goals.  Most importantly, I’ll answer your questions.  I want your purchase to be an informed one.  Exemplary sales practices.
Whether or not you purchase life insurance coverage through the Order, our relationship won’t end.  Things change.  Things like needs, goals and budgets.  What is an appropriate amount of coverage today may not be appropriate tomorrow.  I’ll meet with you annually to make sure you and your family remain adequately protected.  Outstanding Service.
As a Brother Knight, I have the best interests of you and your family at heart.  I’ll render that service, which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself.  High ethical standards.
Call John Canter at (301) 261-3231 or Al Rocca, FICF, at (301) 464-5885 to set up an appointment today.  We want to hear from you!

Announcing the Knights $5000 Club (K5K Club)

Don Crosby  (301) 261-6595

Tickets are now on sale, for members only, for the K5K club at $60.00 each. After the second meeting in October tickets will be made available to the public. Only 200 tickets will be sold. Each ticket gets you dinner for two and 4 drink tickets good for beer wine or sodas the day of the drawing, Sunday, November 23rd. After dinner on that day we will begin drawing numbers. The first number drawn and every 10th number after that will win $60.00. In addition the 192nd through 195th numbers drawn will win $60.00. The holders of the last 5 numbers will be able to decide whether to split the $5000 or to continue drawing. If they don’t all agree to split, numbers will continue to be drawn until those remaining agree to split the money or until there is only one winner of the $5000. You do not have to be present to win. But, if you are not present and you are one of the last 5 to be drawn, it will be assumed that you wish to keep drawing until there is only one winner unless you appoint someone attending to "deal” for you. Doors will be open at 3:30 PM on the day of the drawing. We’ll have a big screen TV for the Redskins-Seahawks (away) game and the Big Six Wheel and the Las Vegas machine operating.
We need a lot of help to pull this off. We’ll need cooks, servers, bartenders, setup and clean up people and Big Six and Vegas operators. Just say yes when someone asks you to help or better yet volunteer. Tickets are available from me, Ward Hostetler at (410) 451-9881, Gene Calmon at (410) 672-6020 or Steve Mihaly at (410) 721-9014.

October is Respect Life Month
October is the month the Church sets aside to focus on the dignity and sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. This year Respect Life Sunday falls on October 5th.  Check out the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ web-site for the current pamphlets (or longer versions if desired) on life issues which you can download free of charge:  http://www.usccb.org/prolife/programs/rlp/rlp0809.shtml
By the time this Accolade goes to print, The Bowie Crofton Pregnancy Clinic will have held their main fundraiser, the Walk & Run for Life.  We thank all the Knights and their families who participated in the event on September 27th, 2008.
Please remember the Gabriel Network in your prayers and gift-giving.  The number of calls received each year by the Gabriel Network has been steadily increasing and unfortunately expenses continue to go up without the corresponding increase in donations.  Please consider sending a donation to the Gabriel Network at P.O. Box 2116, Bowie, MD 20718-2116.
Your participation in the Fannie Mae “Help the Homeless” Walk-a-Thon can help raise funds for the Gabriel Network’s housing program.  It will be held Saturday, November 22nd at 9:00 a.m. on the National Mall in Washington, DC between 7th and 14th Streets.  To register go to www.helpthehomelessdc.org and enter “GABRIEL” as the beneficiary code or contact Amy Morsberger at amy.morsberger@gabrielnetwork.org.

First Friday Masse and Mini-Supper – Our First Friday Mass is on October 3rd. Please come and join us in this celebration of joy in the Eucharist. Mass starts at 7:00 pm in the Columbian Room at Boswell Hall. Everyone is welcome.
Other Catholic Churches in the USA - There are many other Catholic Churches in the United States besides the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to Roman Catholics, there are Byzantine, Antiochian, Chaldean, Armenian, Syrian, Ethiopian and Coptic Catholics. Currently in the United States there are 17 Eastern eparchies (what Roman Catholics call a diocese), which are fully Catholic, that is, in union with the Bishop of Rome.
The majority of American Catholics are Roman Catholic simply because most of the early settlers came from countries where Catholics worshiped according to the liturgical traditions of Rome, including Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Great Britain, etc. As Catholic immigrants arrived from other countries (such as Russia, Greece, Lebanon, Egypt, India, etc.), they brought their prayer traditions with them.
For example, we might think of Iraq as a “Muslim country”, but it has been home to a variety of religious beliefs and practices. Today there are about 670,000 Christians living in Iraq, most of them Chaldean Catholics. In recent years, approximately 160,000 Chaldean Catholics have immigrated to the United States.
Pope John Paul II said that Roman Catholics need to undergo a “conversion” in order to “respect and fully appreciate the dignity of Eastern Christians, and to accept gratefully the spiritual treasures of which the Eastern Catholic Church are the bearers, to the benefits of the entire catholic communion.”

Bingo Report
Steve Mihaly  (410)721-9014

Usually, my Accolade articles are to thank all the great guys who continue to donate their time to the Council Bingo program.  Without their ongoing dedication and support, the program would not work, and the Council would lose a considerable amount of income that enables us to continue our charitable endeavors and pay the rent!  This time, I'm asking for HELP.  You will be surprised to learn that the same guys are doing the work week after week, and many of them, year after year?  What prompted me to write this article was a call from a Bingo Team Captain, informing me that half of tonight’s Bingo team will not be present to work tonight.  On this team, that leaves two men to do the work of four, significantly affecting the efficiency of the program throughout the evening.  Fewer workers, slower response to the patrons.  The evening's program runs later, the patrons become unhappy, and they stop coming.  And, the workers that do show up have to work twice as hard throughout the evening. With a membership as large as ours, this should not be happening. Some of our Bingo team members are returning to the south for the winter, and some of our team members are retiring for health reasons.  At this time we need more Knights to volunteer a few hours of their time, once every five weeks, to keep our Bingo program running.  If you've received this Accolade, you're a Knight.  And, as a Knight, you should feel an obligation to support your Council.  Long time members that have been inactive, or only participate in the Council social functions, need to seriously think about giving something back to the Council.  Many of our members find time to bowl one evening a week, and/or golf one evening a week. There are also many of our members that find time to do both, and still work on a Bingo team!  The Bingo program doesn't require you to work every week, but only to contribute a few hours once every five weeks. If you are a new member, helping with Bingo is a great way to support your Council, and get to know your Brother Knights.  If you've sponsored someone to become a Knight, please pick up the phone, call that person, and encourage them to get involved in the Bingo program.  If you are willing to join one of our five teams, or even serve as a substitute, please contact any of the Council officers, or call me at the number listed above.

Our Membership Blitz will be held in October. Tony Salvemini and his team are preparing for a productive drive. Now is the time for all Grand Knights and their Councils to make preparations for this most important membership program. I urge you to contact Tony and your District Chairman on his Recruitment/Retention Team for any guidance or help you may need. I ask you to carry your Form #100 with you at all times and be prepared to ask a Catholic man and his family to join our Order. Your support to the Blitz and everyday recruitment is essential if we and our Order are to grow in our service to our Church, Community, Council, Family and Youth. Yes, you and I have a mission…We are called to serve…Will you answer that call to serve?

 Council Activities
Paul Mullenhoff   301-262-3963
pmullenhoff@verizon.net

I am sitting here writing this article as tropical storm Hanna is dropping all kinds of rain on the Mid-Atlantic States and it seems like an appropriate time to get things done.  Our Council Activities seem to be moving in the right direction but I am aware that we need to make improvements. And I was talking to Jim Nelson while cooking for First Friday last night and he commented that 30 years ago the Council had 12 to 15 Head Cooks who handled the cooking and were familiar with the kitchen.   And they had their own team of helpers who they could work with.   Well not being very smart, I still recognize a good thing when I see it, and believe that is just what we need at this time with the new initiatives our present Grand Knight has initiated.  And that is the direction I intend to lead us with the Friday evening meals and the Sunday Brunch on the second Sunday of the month.   I intend to identify the Head Cooks and ask them to handle a particular event.  Other than that we have Italian Night at the end of the month and the usual Friday night meals, bingo, meetings and events for some of our elderly.
Italian Night is on October 25th in keeping with our long tradition of famous evenings paying tribute to Christopher Columbus.   And we have Deck the Hall on November 30th to prepare our Hall for the Christmas season and our world famous New Year’s Eve celebration.  Just a reminder that times of our meetings times change in November and December due to Thanksgiving and Christmas on or near the 4th Thursday.  We will be meeting on the first and third Thursdays.
I look forward to seeing you around the Hall.  Last month I offered to give up my reserved parking spot for the month to anyone that volunteers to run a Sunday Breakfast.  Dave Grabowski is the winner for the Month of October.  So enjoy Dave and I—an old man—will trudge in from the outback.  God Bless!
