KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS SACRED HEART COUNCIL 2577 St.JOHN N. NEUMANN ASSEMBLY 1763 Accolade Feb. 2009 |
|
Chaplain’s Report Rev. Msgr. Charles Parry “What are you giving up?" was the question posed to my brothers and me as children at the beginning of Lent each year. Whether it was television, sweets, ice cream or soda, it was a choice to be made and a challenge to embrace. Whether adults or children, the denial to self of certain things that we enjoy is good for the soul. It increases the strength of our will. It is all too common today to hear the words "I couldn't help it" when one is caught in some indiscretion or sinful activity. Desiring to excuse all responsibility, what it really means is that one's will power was so anemic and weak that it was unable to resist wrongful behavior. A weak will is the devil's best friend and our own worst enemy! To strengthen the will is to gain self-control. Rather than drawing it into whatever pleasures appear before it without hesitation, to control the will is to be able to direct it away from evil and toward the good - to be able to better resist temptation. The stronger the will, the better it is under our personal direction and control. Personal holiness, inner satisfaction and true happiness are the consequence of doing what is right and good in the eyes of the Lord. Let us work and sacrifice so that the will power and the ability to choose the good might be strengthened in the days of Lent that will soon be upon us! ______________________
Grand Knight’s Report Kevin Kylus (410) 451-8855 kkylus@comcast.net The upcoming months are a busy time in the Council Year and provide an opportunity for all Council members to become more involved. A Second and Third Degree are scheduled and provide an opportunity for all those who have not advanced passed the First Degree an opportunity to continue on the journey to full Knighthood that they began. The program directors have many activities planned for the upcoming months. Feel free to contact myself or any program director to get involved with an activity. The more you get involved the more enjoyable the Knights of Columbus becomes. Keep checking the calendar for meals and other social events that have been arranged. The Maryland Catholic Conference is sponsoring Lobby Night on February 16th in Annapolis. The annual event, now in its 25th year, will give you the opportunity to speak face-to-face with your elected officials about issues including: Catholic schools, poverty, support for pregnant women in crisis, marriage, and the death penalty. More information is available on their website www.mdcathcon.org. At our social meeting this month we will be joined by the Mayor and City Council of Bowie. After a brief meeting we will open the chamber to our guest and encourage all members and their wives or guest to join us for this informative evening. Knight of the Month for January – Romeo Paternoster. Since joining Sacred Heart Council, Romeo has quickly become very active. Romeo works on a bingo kitchen team and has been a big part of the success of our Sunday Family Breakfasts. Romeo is also quick to jump in and help whenever and wherever needed. When you see Romeo thank him for all he does. Family of the Month for January – Billy and Toni Painter. With the help and support of his wife Toni, Billy has been the long time chairman of our Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest and has helped with publicity for our Council events. Billy and Toni are also supports of most all of our Council function. Thank you both for all you do. ______________________ District Deputy’s Report Vernon Hawkins, PGK, FN, FDW(301) 336-0284 vhawkinsjr@aol.com Thanks to everyone for the great effort that you have made during the first half of the Fraternal Year. We have made many outstanding successes, but we have much more to accomplish in the second half of the year. Only 3% of Catholic men belong to our Order. Many Catholic men are looking for ways to help their church and community. What better way could there be than belonging to the greatest Catholic, Fraternal, Family, Service Organization in the World. Your Grand Knight has the registration forms for this year’s Convention at the Ocean for May 15th to 17th. There will be formal activities for our children again this year, and a sign-up sheet is available for those activities also. Don’t forget, the Convention is for all Knights, not just for the Grand Knight and Delegates. But you must register. Registrations are due by April 15th. Register now and we will see you at the Ocean. God Bless each of you for all that you do for the Knights of Columbus. Etoile and I wish you a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year. Remember, “We Are Called To Serve.” ______________________ Deputy Grand Knight’s Report Andrew Jacobson (240) 476-5268 andrew.jacobson@cfsan.fda.gov The busy month we had in January was a great way to start the new calendar year and the 2nd half of our Fraternal Year. The Family Breakfast on the 11th was another great one and we plan to continue with these on 2nd Sundays. Brother George Vincent did a very good job in coordinating the presentation of “I, Paul” which was well attended on the 17th. Thanks to PGK’s Buck and Mike Garner and Brother Ray DeVous for preparing another fabulous Maryland Stuffed Ham Family Dinner on the 18th. Members who have continued to offer their time and effort for our Council events are greatly appreciated. This month we have the Super Bowl Party on the 1st. Reservations for Ladies Night on the 14th can be made through PGK Jim Seidleck or Ray DeVous, and The Shrove Pancake Supper will be held on Fat Tuesday, the 24th. Our Grand Knight has planned a dinner for new members for the 3rd Friday (20th). If you know of such a member, be sure to invite him and his family to the Hall that evening for a free one on us. ______________________

I want to thank PGK’s Buck and Mike Garner and Ray DeVous for another successful annual Maryland Stuffed Ham Sunday Family Dinner. This Council event is held mid-January every year. See you at the Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 1st Family Activities Joe Bobby (301) 464-2862
Well the holidays are long behind us, but I want to send a special thank you to all who helped make all the family events a success. We are serving our Friday evening meals each Friday evening starting at 6:30 in February and the Sunday Family Breakfast is the second Sunday. I am generally pleased with the turnout for our Family Events. We are still in need of Brother Knights to volunteer to assist at all these events. So if you can spare some time on a Friday evening primarily, please let me know when you are available to assist and I will include you in my schedule. Lent starts at the end of the month so we will be preparing non-meat meals for Friday nights. However, it would still be for only around two hours of your time required to help with a meal. Now a special request from my position. Please express your appreciation to those who are running events that you attend. Those who do the work would appreciate your comments and expressions of appreciations. See you around the Hall.
Membership Report Joe Massimini (240) 997-0402

I have mentioned this several times, but it bears repeating: let's form a Squires Circle for this Council. I know we can find young men ages 10-18 to join a Squires Circle if we just "shake the trees" a little. Have a great Lenten Season. Fraternal Benefits
We all know the old adage – the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence. When it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage offered by another company, the adage holds true. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet – in some cases, a lot less. That’s why it pays to remember another old saying – Read the fine print. There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of Columbus or with another company. I’ll focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing coverage here – pitfalls that an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention. First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period - typically two years - after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your current coverage. Second, it’s unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able to obtain with your existing contract. The two factors that determine how much you’ll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health. Certainly, you’re older now than you were when you took out your current coverage. There’s no way around that one. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors affect the amount of coverage you’ll get for your premium dollar. If someone encourages you to replace – or worse, drop - your existing coverage, please call me. I’ll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest. Call John Canter at (301) 261-3231 or Al Rocca, FICF, at (301) 464-5885 to set up an appointment today. We want to hear from you! I would like to thank all the Brother Knights who came out to Sacred Heart Church in Bowie on Saturday, January 17th to help with installing the 721 crosses to commemorate the 721 children who are killed every hour of every working day through abortion. Very special thanks to PGK Ed Walsh and Brother Knight Jim McFillin of Immaculate Heart of Mary Council No. 9968 for their help in coordinating this event. We thank all the Knights and their families who attended the March for Life in Washington, DC on Thursday, January 22nd. The Maryland Catholic Conference is holding their 25th Annual Lobby Night on Monday February 16th. This is Presidents’ Day and is a Federal and state holiday. Activities begin in the afternoon at 3:00 pm with a commissioning by the bishops. At 4:00 the members of the Conference's staff will brief participants on legislative issues the Church is concerned with this year: support for pregnant women in crisis, the death penalty, Catholic schools, poverty, and marriage. Visits with the legislators are planned for 5:15 until 7:45 pm. Please note that you must pre-register and make an appointment to visit your legislators. To register online, go to http://www.mdcathcon.org/ and click to register. A reception with lawmakers from 6:00 until 8:00 pm in the Miller Senate Office Building West will complete the evening. (A $5 donation for the reception is requested.) Be advised that due to heightened security measures, all participants will be required to show personal identification upon entering the Senate and House buildings. Please reserve Monday, March 9th for the Annual Maryland March for Life in Annapolis. Widows AssistanceDave Thomas (301) 805-5862 dthomas313@aol.com
H E L P ! ! ! Now that I have your undivided attention, I would like your help. We are starting a new program in our Council. In an effort to aid the widows of our Council (in which your spouse may be one some day), we are going to offer our assistance this spring in cleaning up yards, hammering a nail, fixing a leak, etc. It is something the husband would have done if he was still here. Please give me a call or e-mail me and I will add your name to the volunteer list. Remember, many hands make light work. In my opinion, this is the kind of charity that we are about. Don’t forget the K5KII Drawing and Dinner coming on Sunday, April 26th. We’re planning a new improved K5K for this one. There will be someone at the Hall every Tuesday and Friday nights and all meetings and functions to let you sign up or reserve your old number if you wish. We plan to use the same format as before. Each $60 ticket entitles you to 2 dinners, 4 drinks, and a chance to win $5,000 or 28 chances to win a $60 second prize. For those of you who had tickets to the last one, we will reserve your numbers until the end of March at which time they will be released for sale if they haven’t been paid for. Also we will not limit ticket sales this time, for members only. Tickets are on sale now, don’t miss it this time. See me, Ward Hostetler or Gene Calmon. First Friday Mass and Mini-Supper – Our First Friday Mass is on February 6th. Please come and join us in this celebration of joy in the Eucharist. Mass starts at 7:00 pm in the Columbian Room. Mass will be followed by a mini-supper which will be held in the Knight’s Room. Everyone is welcome. The “Keep Christ in Christmas” Poster Contest – The Poster Contest has concluded under the superb leadership of Brother Knight Billy Painter and resulted in over 300 participants in the contest. The Knights of Columbus has sponsored this contest for many years to stress the true meaning of the Christmas holiday. The Poster Contest engaged students at St. Pius Regional School and CCD students from Council Parishes, in an examination of the reason for this celebration. A panel of judges from our Council met to select winners based on expression of theme, originality, and artistic quality and presentation. There were many excellent posters and the selection of winners was a difficult but rewarding experience. Sacred Heart Council honored these winners and their parents at the Council Christmas Party where the first place winners; Gema Esguerra, Sarah Brandes and Angel Duhig and second place winners; Jaclyn Lee, Mariessa McKenna and Makayla Kogut were presented with $50 and $25 checks and certificates for first and second place respectively. This project has again demonstrated that there is a new generation coming up that will keep alive the reason for Christmas and “Keep Christ in Christmas.” As always, if there are any other Church activities that you would like to see happen in Sacred Heart Council, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Supreme Council Report Knights of Columbus distributed 1,200 coats to needy children on Martin Luther King Day, January 19th, in the kickoff of the Order’s new Coats for Kids program. The Supreme Council purchased 7,800 coats from OshKosh B’gosh and London Fog and is implementing a plan to distribute them with the help of local Knights of Columbus Councils in several major cities. The effort began in Washington, D.C. on January 19th, which has been designated a National Day of Service. Coats for children ages 6 to 12 were distributed at three Washington, D.C. Catholic Churches: 600 coats St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Southeast Washington, 300 at Nativity Catholic Church in Northwest Washington, and 300 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Northeast Washington. The distributions took place between 10 a.m. and noon on January 19th, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and a national holiday. Coats were distributed later in January in Detroit and Chicago. “As our nation faces tough economic times, we believe it is very important to respond within our communities in concrete ways to help those most in need,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. “Helping children in need was a fundamental reason for the formation of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 and continues to be a very important component of our work today.” The Coats for Kids program is an outgrowth of the Knights’ Help a Child in Need Campaign, which began in 2006 with a nationwide television appeal to people to donate to charities that support the needs of children.
Council Activities Paul Mullenhoff 301-262-3963 pmullenhoff@verizon.net I thought I would review the month’s activities with you as I have the past few months as there are always new activities as well as some events that change and minor alterations that have to be made. So here is a review of some of the things going on. First, the Council meetings will be on the second and fourth Thursday evenings this month and I believe we will have a Second Degree on the 18th. Next, we will lead off with the Super Bowl Party on the 1st. Ladies Night is on the 14th and we have a Community Dance on the 22nd. It is hard to believe that Lent will begin at the end of the month but we will have the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on the 24th and Ash Wednesday is the 25th. Our intent is to have a meatless meal each Friday evening during Lent. Our Grand Knight is determined to run Friday night meals for a year to see if you will support the events. In addition, we are trying to get our meal menu out early in the week to assist you in your decision process. I hope you will attend. We will continue with our Council’s Sunday Family Breakfast on the second Sunday from 9 AM until noon. This is a lot of work by a lot of the Brother Knights but we all completely support this Family Activity. And then there is always the set-up and cleanup associated with it and we could use some help. In October I offered to give up my reserved parking spot for the month to anyone that volunteers to run a Sunday Family Breakfast. Romeo Paternoster and PGK Dave Grabowski have been trading the spot for the last four months but only Dave can use it. Can I interest any of you in the spot for March when it is windy and rainy outside and you won’t get chilled walking in? All you have to do is run a Sunday Family Breakfast. I will be seeing many of you around the Hall hopefully assisting in all the various activities that are going on. Until next month… State Council Report
