Chaplain’s Report
Rev. Msgr. Charles Parry
It was a day of great rejoicing for the archdiocese and for all of Bowie with
the ordination of Bishop Barry Knestout at the
Cathedral of Saint Matthew in downtown Washington on December 29th , 2008. The
new bishop grew up here in Bowie and attended Saint Pius X Church. He is a
graduate of Saint Pius X Regional School
as well as Bowie High School. He studied for the priesthood at Mount Saint
Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland and has been a priest of the archdiocese
since his ordination in 1989. He will now serve
as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington along with Bishop
Gonzalez and Bishop Holley. Together these bishops assist Archbishop Wuerl in
the pastoral care of the faithful in Washington, DC, as well as Prince George's,
Montgomery, Charles, Saint Mary's and Calvert counties in Maryland. The bishop's
role is a unique one
encompassing the responsibility to sanctify, to teach and to govern the people
of God. Founded by Christ Himself hrough the Apostles, the Catholic Church
(Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic) is the only Christian body (including also
Orthodox Catholic) that can claim
'apostolic succession.' This means that the authority of the Twelve Apostles and
the divine mission given them by Jesus Himself has been transmitted to others
(bishops) by the laying on of hands – this
succession began with the Apostles and has continued to the present generation.
This is one important mark of our Catholic identity. We rightly, then, refer to
Bishop Knestout as 'a successor to the Apostles' for so indeed he is. Our
prayers are with him as he begins his pastoral ministry among us with a
shepherd's care.

I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and that your New Year is off to a great
start. It is hard to believe that the Fraternal Year is half over already, it
seems like the Installation was only yesterday.
Through the help of many members we have been able to accomplish a lot so far.
We have maintained many of our existing programs and have introduces a few new
ones.
The Friday Night Dinners and Sunday Family Breakfasts have
been a big success and continue to grow. We have been able to continue our
support of seminarians as well as make donations to the Gabriel Network,
Children’s Medical Center and the Appalachian Project to name just a few. We
also will be giving close to $12,000 to local organizations from the Tootsie
Roll donations. While this is good, there is still a lot to be done in the next
six months and we will need Total Effort All Members if we are
going to accomplish it all. Please continue to support all of the activities
that the Council sponsors and try and find some
time to volunteer in an area that interests you. In an organization like the
Knight of Columbus you get out of it what you put in.
If you know of a Catholic gentleman that is not a member, now
is an excellent time to ask him to join our order. We will be having a 1st
Degree at our social meeting this month and Sacred Heart is hosting a 2nd degree
in February and the 3rd Degree in March.
Knight of the Month for December – Jim Lienesch.
Jim has been volunteering his time to help with the renovations that have
recently been completed at the Hall. Rarely a day went by that you would to see
him hard at work. Thanks Jim and congratulations.
Family of the Month for December – The family of
Steve and Marguerite Dobrosielski. They are the Councils Pro-Life
Couple. Steve is active in the Bingo program and Marguerite is the photographer
for the Council. They also, are always there to lend a hand in other areas when
needed. Thanks to the Dobrosielski family for all they do.
Happy New Year…and I hope to see you at the Hall soon!

I hope every one had a safe and very happy holiday season. January begins an
opportunity for a new beginning and new goals. It only seems like yesterday that
at the Grand Knights College, we began the
planning of our Fraternal Year. Now we are half way through the year. As we
begin the second half of the Fraternal Year, I thank all Grand Knights and
Councils for their efforts to reach their recruitment and retention goals.
Remember our Supreme Knight and State Deputy has designated recruitment and
retention as their top
priorities. We have a number of First Degrees scheduled for the remaining half
of the Fraternal Year. Our District also has another Second Degree and a Third
Degree scheduled before the summer. Remember that meeting your membership quota
is a requirement for the Star Council Award.
Please consider participating in one of the planned State
Council tours. You can expect a great trip and the wonderful company of your
Brother Knights and their families. Also, please consider supporting our State
Charity Fund.

For me, the several events at Sacred Heart Council throughout the year have
become personal milestones for the Fraternal Year, which will be half over this
month. Thanks to all who have contributed
their time, effort, and assistance in making the events the successes that they
have been. We arrive at the end of the busy, yet wonderful Christmas season and
have begun already to prepare for our annual
Bull and Oyster Roast.
The month of January also has in store the Stuffed Ham Sunday
Family Dinner, which has also been popular in years past. These are just a
couple of events that come to mind for the month of January, please look for
details on these and other activities in this issue of The Accolade.

Have you made any resolutions for the coming year? Perhaps you
can resolve to find one or two new members or bring back an old member to the
Knights of Columbus. We have Form 100's available for signing,
and there are plenty of opportunities this month for people to join. All a
person needs to qualify is to be a Practical Catholic male over the age of 18.
So for the New Year please ask someone you know if they would like to join.
Their answer might surprise you.
Our next First Degree is scheduled for January 22nd.
The Saturday and Sunday prior to that, January 17th and 18th,
we will be conducting a blitz at Elizabeth Seton Church in Crofton. If you would
like to help with that blitz, please contact either myself or Bill Sapero.
If you are a First Degree member, mark your calendar to take
the Second Degree here at Sacred Heart Council on Tuesday, February 17th . If
you cannot make the Second Degree that evening, contact me and I will do what I
can to get you to another Second Degree in the area. For you Second Degree
members, you can mark your calendar for Friday, March 27th to take your Third
Degree. If you know you cannot make it, please contact me for other dates for

Well I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Years.
This was the most wonderful time of the year for our children and families and I
am sure all enjoyed our events. A special thank you to all who
helped make these events a success. And a huge thank you to PGK Mike Gardner for
his continuing support of our annual Christmas Classic Movie Night. Mike is a
very special person and we appreciate all he does to make our Council run as
smoothly as it does.
We are serving our Friday evening meals and the Sunday
breakfast in January. I am very pleased with the turnout for our breakfasts. We
are, however, still in need of Brother Knights to volunteer to assist in these
events. It seems that the same people do most of the work at the Hall and we
would like to add to that list. So if you can spare some time on a Friday
evening primarily, please let me know when you are available to assist and I
will include you in my schedule. It would only be for around two hours.

Fraternal Benefits
Tempus fugit. Time flies. The older you get, the more that statement seems to
ring true. Especially as we ring in another new year. I hope that 2008 was a
healthy, prosperous year for you and your family.
If you’re like most people, you made some resolutions for the
new year. If I may, I’d like to add to your list of resolutions by two. First,
write them down. A resolution is really a goal for the year and, until you
commit a goal to writing, it’s nothing more than a wish. So write your
resolution down. Whether they be to lose weight, contribute more time and money
to charity, read more or watch less television, you’re more likely to stick to
them if you write them down.
Secondly, schedule some time to visit with me, your
professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent. The “insurance check-up” that
I’ll provide (free of charge, by the way!) will quickly identify any gaps in
your family’s insurance program. And you’ll want to fill those gaps now, not
later. Because unlike many other products, you need more then money to obtain
life insurance. You also need good health, and no one ring a bell warning you
when your health is about to change.
Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious
few other financial products can – guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums,
the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen
to you. We call that peace of mind, and that’s – as they say in the credit card
commercial – priceless.
Call John Canter at (301) 261-3231 or Al Rocca, FICF, at (301)
464-5885 to set up an appointment today. We want to hear from you!

Gifts for Adults with Intellectual Difficulties
David Grabowski, PGK (301) 464-2059
I wish to express the gratitude of the Grand Knight and myself to all members of
the Council who participated in the thirteenth annual gift giving to the Adults
with Intellectual Difficulties at the Bridges of Largo. The Christmas season was
made brighter for these adults when Santa Claus delivered the gifts. Fifty-six
Brother Knights and their families brought gifts or donated money to purchase
these gifts. Special thanks go out to Brother Knights Gary Harish, John McKenna,
Frank Evans, Dave Thomas, and Ed Walsh who helped inventory, pack, deliver, and
handout the gifts. As always, Ed Walsh did a super job playing Santa Claus.

First Friday Mass and Mini-Supper – Our First Friday Mass on January 2nd is
canceled. The Knights Room bar is closed. Memorial Mass for Father Patrick Kemp
– There will be a Memorial Mass held for Father Patrick Kemp at St. Edward the
Confessor on Saturday, January 3rd
at 10:00 am. Father Kemp was pastor of St. Edward’s for 15 years and chaplain of
Sacred Heart Council #2577.
The Year of Saint Paul – Pope Benedict has declared June 28th,
2008, to June 29th, 2009 “The Year of Saint Paul” on the occasion of the
bi-millennium of his birth, which historians have placed between the years 7 and
10 A.D.
In declaring this special Jubilee Year dedicated to the
Apostle Paul, Pope Benedict stated “Paul, a former violent persecutor of
Christians, when he fell to the ground dazzled by the divine light on the road
to Damascus, did not hesitate to change sides to the Crucified One and followed
him without second thoughts. He lived and worked for Christ, for him he suffered
and died.
How timely his example is today!”To help celebrate this
Jubilee Year, Sacred Heart Council is sponsoring a play “I, Paul” by John De
Mers and performed by Charles D. Baker in the Cardinal Room at Boswell Hall on
Saturday, January 17th, 2009 at 7:00 pm.
Mr. Charles D. Baker has been performing the lives of great
men in religious history since 1989. He will be here to perform the life of St.
Paul. His mission is to bring, through the medium of the stage, inspiration and
education through the lives of these great men. His plays are in one-man format,
and they are in the truest sense real theater. These stories are true and
dramatic. The audience will see in the lives of these great men the same
struggles each of us shares in strengthening and persevering in our faith. These
saints and we meet on common ground in our zeal to know God. Their tools should
be our tools, their quest should be our quest, and, if they are, then their holy
wisdom will be our holy wisdom and their reward will be our
reward. These men followed Christ. If we follow them, we follow Christ also.
Brief Play Description: The greatest evangelist that ever
lived. A great Jew turns into a great Christian in the twinkling of an eye. The
characterization is such that Christ relents to the constant pleadings of Paul
to release him for one hour and forty minutes so he can have that opportunity to
preach again. Imagine that! Paul is back, and you will never listen to the
letters of St. Paul in the same way again. There is no charge for this
performance and All Are Welcome.
As always, if there are any other Church activities that you would like to see
happen in Sacred Heart Council, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Pro-Life News
Steven Dobrosielski (301) 262-6860
Thursday, January 22nd marks the 35th anniversary of U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v.
Wade abortion decision. The Archdiocese of Washington is hosting its annual
Youth Rally and March for Life on January 22nd 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. The event will
be held at the Verizon Center (formerly the MCI Center), 601 F Street, NW
between 7th
and 6th Streets, Washington, DC.
The Verizon Center is Metro accessible (Gallery Place, China
Town Station) and a reasonable walk to the National Mall for the March for Life.
Doors open at 7:00 a.m. so plan on arriving early to be sure to get a seat.
Overflow crowds, not able to get into the Verizon Center, may attend Mass at the
Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle; St. Patrick; St. Mary, Mother of God and
other nearby parishes. The rally at the Verizon Center begins at 7:30 a.m. and
will feature Steve Angrisano, Matt Maher and Band, Jessica Marie Tous and the
Who Do You Say I Am band. Admission is free. Small backpacks, signs and banners
are allowed inside, but poles and larger signs must be stored in a lobby area.
Priests will be available for confessions from 8:00
a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Rosary will start at 9:30, followed by the Mass at 10:00 a.m.
celebrated by Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl and other bishops from
around the country. Following the Youth Mass, join the thousands of others on
the National Mall for the 12:00 noon March for Life to the U.S. Capitol along
with visits to legislators.
If possible, arrive at the mall by 11:30. All Knights and
their families are encouraged to attend. As a new and hopefully peaceful year
begins, the renewal of our pro-life beliefs is appropriate. We must remember to
respect all life from conception until natural death. Especially keep in your
prayers all of the children who suffer as a result of war and other man-made
disasters.
Have a blessed and peaceful New Year.

It's hard to believe that the Christmas Holiday Season is past and
we are into a new year. I thought I would review the month's activities with you
like last month, as there are always some events that change and minor
alterations that have to be made. So here is a review of some of the things
going on. First, the Council meetings will be on the second and fourth Thursdays
this month as they usually are. Next, our intent is to have a meal each Friday
evening not just on First Friday. We have tried to improve the food from the
hamburgers and hot dogs for these evenings and have put a lot of effort into
these meals. In addition, we are trying to get our meal menu out early in the
week to assist you in your decision process. (Thanks Ray.) I hope you will
attend.
We will continue with our Council Sunday Family Breakfast on
the second Sunday starting at 9:00 AM. We have the Maryland Stuffed Ham Family
Dinner on the 18th and Bull and Oyster Roast on the 24th. All this is a lot of
work by a lot of the Brother Knights. And then there is always the set-up and
cleanup associated with it. We have a great time at these work events and build
a lot of friendships.
In October I offered to give up my reserved parking spot for
the
month to anyone that volunteers to run a Sunday Family Breakfast.
Romeo Paternoster and Dave Grabowski have been trading the
spot
for the last four months. Unfortunately Romeo drives a 28 wheeler
and can't get into the spot without occupying 6 others.
So Dave had
the spot in October, November and December and
looks like he has it
for January as well. Can I interest any of
you in the spot for February
when it is cold and windy outside
and you won't get chilled walking
in? All you have to do is run the Sunday Family Breakfast.
I will be seeing many of you around the Hall hopefully
assisting in
all the various activities that are going on.
Until next month…..
